Dropping a Dime: Coethnic Bias and Wartime Informing∗

چکیده
How important are ethnic considerations in shaping an individual’s willingness to inform — to “drop a dime” — on insurgents in wartime? To date, our theories assume individual calculations are driven by security concerns, not identity issues. We argue instead that coethnic bias, the tendency to favor cooperation with a coethnic, shapes individual decisions about informing and beliefs about the subsequent consequences. We use a survey experiment to measure how individuals respond to calls to participate in the Guardians of Peace program, a widespread campaign by the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan designed to encourage informing on insurgents. Administrated in late 2011 to 2,700 respondents across 100 villages, we manipulate the ethnic identity of the program’s endorser across Tajik, Pashtun, and ISAF spokesmen. Using multilevel modeling, we find that the presence of a persistent coethnic bias that shapes support for the program even in the face of exposure to victimization. We also find that ISAF endorsements reinforce coethnic bias among Tajiks and that beliefs about retaliation are also influenced by coethnic considerations.

Researching Coethnic Migrants: Privileges and Puzzles of "Insiderness"
This article reflects on fieldwork experiences with coethnic migrants in London to challenge understandings of insiderness centred in shared ethnicity, as well as the usefulness of the insider-outsider divide in migration research more generally. Drawing on examples from a study of migrants' social relations, it shows how gender, migrant status, and occupational position sometimes shape researc...
متن کاملLosing Wallets, Retaining Trust? The Relationship Between Ethnic Heterogeneity and Trusting Coethnic and Non-coethnic Neighbours and Non-neighbours to Return a Lost Wallet
The constrict claim that ethnic heterogeneity drives down social trust has been empirically tested across the globe. Meta-analyses suggest that neighbourhood ethnic heterogeneity generally undermines ties within the neighbourhood (such as trust in neighbours), but concurrently has an inconsistent or even positive effect on interethnic ties (such as outgroup trust). While the composition of the ...

This is an inquiry into the background and the origins of bias and disinformation as viewed from the philosophical perspective. This paper demonstrates the undeniable analogy between the philosophical framework defined by Schopenhauer and the informational model of decision situations as viewed today in operations research, management sciences, and decision sciences. Bias, and disinformation—th...
متن کاملGreat Expectations: Ethnicity, Performance, and Ugandan Voters∗
When voters vote ethnically, as they do in many African countries, what is the reason? Do voters prefer coethnics because of ethnic pride? Or is ethnicity as a proxy for performance? I use a voting simulation experiment in Uganda to investigate the underlying rationale for ethnic voting. I find evidence that voters anticipate more future goods from a coethnic presidential candidate. Most striki...

Second, DIME implements intern...
